Illinois Cow 1.0
University of Illinois
Illinois Cow is an app created for Veterinary Students asasupplementary study aid to their traditional dissectionlaboratory, but is gaining interest in other areas such ascomparative anatomy, animal sciences and agriculture and is easy touse by students atany level. Illinois Cow is unique in that usesAugmented Reality todisplay interactive 3D anatomy, when yourdevice camera is pointedat a trigger image. The trigger image canbe downloaded andprintedfromhttp://vetmed.illinois.edu/illinois-cow/wp-content/uploads/sites/49/2018/05/cow-trigger.jpgTheAndroid Phone or Tablet serves as a magic lens that, when aimedatthe provided target image, lets the user see the cow and/oritsdifferent anatomical systems clearly, from any perspective.Theuser’s sense of proprioception helps them to learn therelativeplacements of organs. The app allows the user to engagewith thecow at life-size scale, or, as a smaller desktop model. Theusercan place the target image on a tabletop, on their floor, orhangit on a wall. The system provides an extensive set ofcontrollableannotations that help the student to learn, drill, andpractice thelocations of over 100 anatomical elements in the cow.The user canzoom in and out of the 3D cow with a finger motion, walk(physically) around the (virtual) cow and / or move thetargetimage to view the cow from different perspectives in 3D, andturnthe visibility of anatomical systems on or off by pressingbuttonswith recognizable anatomical system icons. A dropdown menuofanatomical systems and structures, organized hierarchically headtotail, exterior to interior, and top to bottom, walks theuserthrough the anatomy of the cow. Additionally, the user can turnonvisual markers to indicate the locations of structurescommonlystudied by veterinary students in a dissection lab. When anitem inthe dropdown menu is chosen, the app automatically turns offanystructures that naturally cover it, and marks it with an 3Darrow,dotted line shape, or ring. For the gastrointestinal system,if youtouch the arrows that are displayed it prints the name of theorganthe touched arrow is pointing toward. The user has the optiontochange their perspective by moving around the marker, to zoom, toturn other systems on or off to better see where it liesinrelation to other organs, and can even freeze the image onthescreen. Additional tools include a button to flip the cowupsidedown, or on its side, a button to control the visibility ofthe ribnumbers, and a reset button, which turns the visibility ofallstructures back on. More detailed instructions and suggestionsfornavigating the app can be foundat:http://vetmed.illinois.edu/illinois-cow/wp-content/uploads/sites/49/2018/06/iCow-instructions.pdfIllinoisCow helps Veterinary students be better prepared for theiranatomylab, and may potentially reduce the number of animalsrequired indissection laboratories.
